Understanding the weight units
Metric units (milligram, gram, kilogram, tonne) are used in most of the world and in all scientific work. Each unit is exactly 1,000 times the one before it, which makes metric conversions simple to follow.
Imperial and US units (ounce, pound, stone, ton) are still standard in the UK and the United States. One pound equals exactly 453.59237 grams, and one stone equals 14 pounds — stone is mainly used in the UK and Ireland for body weight. Note that a US "short ton" (2,000 lb) and a UK "long ton" (2,240 lb) are different — our converter handles both separately.
Troy and pharmaceutical units (troy ounce, pennyweight, scruple) are specialist units. The troy ounce (31.1034768 g) is the worldwide standard for weighing gold, silver, and other precious metals — it is about 10% heavier than the regular ounce, which is a common source of costly mistakes when buying or selling bullion.
Gem units: the carat (exactly 0.2 grams) is the international standard for weighing diamonds and gemstones. One carat is divided into 100 points, so a "50-point diamond" weighs half a carat.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds. A quick mental shortcut: multiply kilograms by 2.2. So 70 kg is roughly 154 lb.
What is the difference between an ounce and a troy ounce?
A standard (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.3495 grams, while a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Gold, silver, and platinum prices are always quoted per troy ounce, so make sure you use the right unit when valuing precious metals.
Why do people in the UK measure body weight in stone?
The stone (14 pounds) is a traditional British unit that remains in everyday use for body weight in the UK and Ireland. For example, 11 stone equals 154 pounds, or about 69.9 kg.
Is weight the same as mass?
In everyday language, yes — when we say something "weighs 5 kg" we mean its mass. Technically, weight is the force of gravity acting on mass, measured in newtons. This converter works with mass units, which is what scales display and what people mean in daily use.
How accurate is this converter?
All conversion factors use exact internationally agreed definitions (for example, 1 lb = 453.59237 g by definition since 1959). Results are rounded to six significant figures, which is more than enough precision for any practical purpose.
