Equation Simplifier & Solver

Evaluate and simplify a numerical expression, or solve a linear equation in x. Include an = sign to solve.

Try: 2x + 3 = 7 − x (5 + 3) × 2³ ÷ 4 3(x−2) = x + 4

Equation simplifier and solver

This tool does two things. Enter a plain arithmetic expression and it evaluates and simplifies it following the correct order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS). Enter an equation with an equals sign and a variable x, and it solves the linear equation for you — even when x appears on both sides or inside brackets.

How to enter expressions

Use * for multiplication, / for division, and ^ for powers, with brackets for grouping. For equations, put the variable as x on either or both sides, for example 3*(x - 2) = x + 4. The solver moves everything to one side, works out the coefficient of x and the constant, and returns the value of x with the key steps.

Linear vs other equations

This solver is built for linear equations (where x appears to the first power). If you enter a quadratic or higher-degree equation, it will let you know — use our algebra solver for quadratics, or the graph plotter to find roots visually.

Frequently asked questions

What does "no solution" mean?

It means the equation is never true for any value of x (for example, x + 1 = x + 2). "All real numbers" means both sides are identical, so every value works.
