Data Transfer Rate Converter

Convert internet and network speeds between bits and bytes per second — bps, kbps, Mbps, Gbps, MB/s and more.

Convert data transfer and internet speed units

Internet and network speeds are measured in bits per second (bps, Mbps, Gbps), while file download speeds are often shown in bytes per second (MB/s). Because one byte is eight bits, these numbers look very different — this converter makes the translation instant and accurate.

Why your download speed looks 8× slower than your plan

Internet providers advertise speed in megabits (Mbps), but your browser shows download progress in megabytes (MB/s). Since a byte is 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection delivers a maximum of about 12.5 MB/s. So a download peaking around 12 MB/s on a 100 Mbps line is actually running at full speed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?

No. Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s.
